Summer Timetable Updates

Dentdale Bus Saved

The bus service between Dent Station, Dent, Sedbergh and Kendal will continue to operate every Saturday throughout the year.

The late-afternoon journeys at 1645 from Sedbergh and 1735 from Dent Station will run during the summer months only (until 29th October 2011 and again from 7th April 2012), providing useful connections with the Leeds - Settle - Carlisle railway line.

The service was threatened with withdrawal, following budget cuts by Cumbria County Council, but Dent Parish Council have led an initiative to raise funds to allow the service to continue. Funding has been provided by the Friends of the Settle Carlisle Line, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Dent Parish Council, Sedbergh Parish Council, Dentdale Show, Dent Music and Beer Festival and the Dales & Bowland Community Interest Company.

Full timetable details on service 564A are available here.

Sunday and Bank Holiday Buses in Wensleydale

Due to funding cuts by North Yorkshire County Council services 156 and 157 (Northallerton - Leyburn - Hawes) no longer operate on Sundays or Bank Holidays.

A replacement service - Wensleydale Flyer service 856 - runs via a more direct route between Northallerton, Bedale, Leyburn, Aysgarth and Hawes. Click here to download the new timetable as a printable PDF file.

Changes to Service 66A (Keighley - Skipton - Grassington)

DalesBus Tickets

Most ticket prices on the Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday DalesBus network have been frozen again for Summer 2011.

Full details of the Dales Rover ticket scheme are available here.

Don’t forget that if you’re just making a single or return journey on just one DalesBus route an ordinary single or day return ticket will usually be cheaper than buying a Rover ticket. Rover tickets provide best value when you’re changing between buses during the day.

Through tickets are now available from service 870 (Wakefield - Leeds - Ilkley) onto service 874 (Ilkley - Buckden).

Hawes Town and Villages Bus

The Little White Bus also now provides a demand responsive service in the Upper Wensleydale and Upper Swaledale areas.

Disruption to Service 581 (Settle - Ingleton - Kirkby Lonsdale)

Due to road re-surfacing works along the A65 service 581 will NOT serve Kirkby Lonsdale on Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th September 2011.

The road closure at Site 1 - Westhouse means that alternative routes would seriously disrupt the timetable on those days. Therefore the bus will terminate at Ingleton Community Centre on the two days above.

At all other times during the next few weeks the route will be open but may be subject to delays as a convoy system is in place along this route.

Service 581 will not serve Newby Lane End between the times of 0930hrs and 1500hrs on 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 19th, 20th and 21st September. The bus will operate along Clapham Old Road between Clapham and Ingleton and will endeavour to operate as consistently as possible. As soon as the bus can operate along the A65 after 1500hrs on the closure days it will do so.

Again there is a convoy system in place at all other times which may cause some delays.

For further information click here (PDF file) or contact Kirkby Lonsdale Coach Hire Ltd on 01524 733831.

Extra Buses for the Summer Holidays

Extra Trains to Settle for Jane Tomlinson Walk for All

Northern is sponsoring the Jane Tomlinson Walk for All after naming a train in honour of the charity campaigner in March this year. Extra train services will run to Settle for the event on Sunday 14th August to ensure as many walkers as possible can travel there by train.

There will be a special early morning train leaving Leeds at 05.35, arriving in Settle at 06.30. This is perfect timing if you are taking part in either the 26 or 14 mile walks as it gives you plenty of time for pre-walk registration.

If you're taking part in the 5mile walk you can travel from Leeds on the 09.00 train, which will have additional carriages, arriving in Settle at 10.10.

All ticket sales will go to the Jane Tomlinson Appeal (price of return ticket is £10).

If you wish to travel on either of these trains, please book your ticket to avoid disappointment, at www.walkforall.com

Richard Allan, Assistant Area Director for Northern, comments: “We are expecting a lot of people to travel to this fantastic event by train and we have provided as many extra seats as possible. We would still urge anyone wanting to travel on the 05.35 or 09.00 trains to pre-book their seats through the Walk for All website as tickets will be sent out in advance and your place on the trains guaranteed. We wish everyone taking part, whether you are attempting 26 miles or 5, the very best of luck!”

Extra carriages will also be provided on the following trains:

08.40 Leeds to Morecambe (this will call at Giggleswick where we will provide a coach service to Settle)
12.20 Morecambe to Leeds (again with coach service from Settle to Giggleswick)
16.37 Carlisle to Leeds train
23.15 Skipton to Leeds train

An additional Northern train will return from Settle at 20.15 and arrive at Leeds at 21.13.

Full timetable details are available here (PDF file).

New Early Morning Trains: Leeds-Carlisle & Carlisle-Leeds

Changes in the train timetable for the Settle-Carlisle line see new early morning direct trains running from Carlisle to Leeds and from Leeds to Carlisle. The new services started on Monday, 23 May.

The early morning trains run on weekdays. Departing Leeds at 0555, the northbound service arrives at Carlisle at 0841. The southbound train leaves Carlisle at 0558 and arrives at Leeds at 0837. DalesBus Driver of the Year 2009

The YDPTUG DalesBus Driver of the Year award for 2009 was won by Gordon Lumley of Arriva Yorkshire, who was the regular driver on services  870 and 874 over the summer season.

The award was decided by a vote amongst the User Group's membership. Gordon is very popular with all the bus users; always providing a safe, reliable service and creating a friendly atmosphere on the journey. He also proposed that name badges be worn by all DalesBus drivers adding that extra degree of professionalism to the job.

The award was presented to Gordon at Ilkley Bus and Train interchange on 6th December by Howard Handley (YDPTUG Chairman) who again stated that, like most of the drivers on the DalesBus service, Gordon provided an excellent service but also went that extra mile.

An improved service is provided this year, including a link from Kirkby Lonsdale, and improved connections with trains from Leeds and Preston. The service is also operated by a larger bus, allowing groups to make use of it.

The new Northern Dalesman service 832/831 runs from Ribblehead Station at 10.35 on Sundays and Bank Holidays to Hawes, before continuing via the Buttertubs Pass to Swaledale, and on to Leyburn. From Leyburn, the bus then provides a journey back to Reeth, with connections on the Wensleydale Railway from Leeming Bar and from Leeds on Eastern Dalesman service 820.

Sunday Buses in Nidderdale and the Eastern Dales

The summer Sunday and Bank Holiday timetable in Nidderdale and the Eastern Dales continues until 18th October 2009.

Eastern Dalesman service 820 runs from Seacroft, Leeds and Otley to Pateley Bridge, Fountains Abbey, Ripon, Leyburn and Richmond, replacing service 802. The bus runs at similar times to last year, but due to a weight restriction on Greenhow Hill no longer serves Blubberhouses and Greenhow, and instead runs via Menwith Hill, Dacre and Summerbridge.

Nidderdale Rambler service 825, from Harrogate via Brimham Rocks, Pateley Bridge and Lofthouse to How Stean Gorge and Middlesmoor, runs at similar times to the winter timetable. There is however an improved service to Upper Nidderdale, with four return journeys, with a choice of return buses at 15.55 from How Stean Gorge via Lofthouse to Pateley Bridge and 16.55 from Middlesmoor via Lofthouse to Pateley Bridge and Harrogate.

The all-year-round Sunday and Bank Holiday buses on service 24 between Harrogate and Pateley Bridge continue unchanged.

The Sunday and Bank Holiday summer timetable in Wharfedale and Malhamdale continues until 18th October, 2009 with three journeys on the Cravenlink service from Ilkley to Skipton extended through to Malham.

New connecting services to Ilkley are provided on service 850 from Bradford (departing at 09.25) and on service 870 from Wakefield (08.50) and Leeds (09.20).

A through service from Seacroft, Leeds and Otley to Upper Wharfedale and Hawes is reintroduced. The Yorkshire Dalesman service 800 leaves Leeds City Bus Station at 09.50, returning from Hawes at 16.00.

Settle Carlisle Line Audio Guides

BBC Radio 4 presenter Mark Holdstock has teamed up with Friends of the Settle Carlisle Line On-Train Guides Coordinator Richard Morris and Northern to produce sound commentaries for the famous Settle-Carlisle railway journey. The trip is split up into sections starting and finishing at stations so if the train is delayed or is running ahead of the commentary the listener can pause - or fast forward to the next station and restart. At either end there is a commentary on Settle and Carlisle stations. These recordings are available as MP3 files, or pre-loaded on MP3 players that can be purchased at stations.

The MP3 files can be downloaded free of charge from the Settle Carlisle Line website at: www.settle-carlisle.co.uk/download_audio.cfm

Ribblehead Viaduct Walk

Following the huge success of the Ribblehead Viaduct Walk in 2007, the event will be repeated by the Friends of the Settle Carlisle Line on Sunday 26th July 2009, during the closure of the Settle-Carlisle for engineering works.

Postal applications for tickets for the walk are now being accepted. To get more details and the application form, go to http://www.settle-carlisle.co.uk/userDocs/Applic%20form.pdf.

An online ordering facility is also now available at www.settlecarlisle.co.uk (pre-booking is essential for the walk).

Note that the Ingleborough Pony service will amended on July 12th/19th/26th during the Settle-Carlisle line closure, with the service extended to start/finish at Skipton Railway Station - click here for details.

Ingleborough Pony Changes - 12th/19th/26th July

The Skipton - Settle - Carlisle railway line will be closed for engineering works between 10th and 27th July 2009.  In order to maintain some connections with the train service the Ingleborough Pony bus service will have a revised timetable during this period - on Sundays 12th, 19th and 26th July.

It was originally planned to provide connections with trains on the Morecambe line at Clapham Station, but as that line is also now affected by engineering works on these dates, this will no longer be possible. A revised timetable has now been produced, providing connections with trains from/to Leeds at Skipton Station instead. This will provide the facility to travel by bus from Skipton Rail Station to Settle, Ribblehead (for connection to Ingleton) and Hawes (for onward service to Swaledale and Leyburn).

To facilitate this it has however unfortunately been necessary to make some changes to morning and early evening buses on the Ingleborough Pony service, including the withdrawal of some journeys.

Northern will again be operating the popular Ribblehead Music Train on Saturdays 9th May, 13th June and 4th July 2009, on the 19.19 service from Leeds to Ribblehead, which will return from Ribblehead at 21.10 to Skipton.

Pennine Jazz will feature on each train and Hall Brothers Folk will provide music on 9th May and 13th June whilst Malc and Jeannie take the folk slot on 4th July.

Real ales, quality wine and soft drinks will be available from Keighley & Worth Valley Railway catering team.

Advance tickets for the return journey from Skipton to Ribblehead are now available to buy online at www.settle-carlisle.co.uk and from:

Settle Railway Station
Cafe Express, Skipton Railway Station

Advance purchase tickets cost £5.00 per person (compared to £8.60 if paying at the time of travel).

The Ripon Roweller Fountains Shuttle service provides a mainly hourly service throughout the day on Sundays and Bank Holidays, running between Ripon Bus Station and Fountains Abbey Visitor Centre. Most journeys also serve the Deer Park.

All the buses connect at Ripon Bus Station with service 36 to/from Leeds and Harrogate, and Transdev DayGOLD, RiponCONNECT and GOLDCard tickets are valid on the Fountains Shuttle. English National Concessionary Passes are also valid for free travel.

An added bonus is that bus users with a valid ticket are entitled to half-price entry to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.

New Sunday Bus Links to Ingleton and the Ingleborough Area

The Ingleborough Pony is an experimental new Sunday bus service, linking rail stations and car parks along the south of the National Park along the A65, to provide a service especially for walkers to and around Ingleborough National Nature Reserve. Ingleborough Pony service 888 will run every Sunday and Bank Holiday until 28th September 2008.

Named in tribute to the traditional breed of pony that once worked in the lead mines of the Northern Dales and in packhorse trains to provide essential goods and services to Dales communities, the Ingleborough Pony is an environmentally efficient bus service which connects car parks, rail stations and walking routes.

The Pony will give superb new opportunities for linear walks across Yorkshire’s most famous mountain. It is also planned to encourage walkers to leave their cars at home, by providing a direct link with the famous scenic Settle-Carlisle railway line at Ribblehead to give car-free access to the heart of the National Park - and equality of opportunity for visitors, young and old, without access to a car. There’s also a direct link from Clapham Station on the Morecambe Line as well as from Ribblehead to Ingleton with its famous Waterfalls Walk and White Scar Caves.

The bus also connects at Ribblehead Station with Wensleydale Explorer Bus 807 to/from Aysgarth and Hawes. Any single journey on the Ingleborough Pony is just £1, children half price.

The Ingleborough Pony bus service has been devised by the Dales & Bowland Community Interest Company with funding from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund and Natural England.

Summer Sunday Buses in Nidderdale

New for the 2008 season are bus links to How Stean Gorge and Brimham Rocks, although sadly the link from York will not be running this year. These Nidderdale Rambler services will be operated by local company AS Coaches of Fellbeck. The popular 10.05 departure from Harrogate to Pateley Bridge is also reintroduced for the summer season.

Service 802 from West Yorkshire is back on a weekly frequency, having run only every two weeks last year. For 2008 this service starts in Seacroft instead of Wakefield, and is operated by Godsons of Leeds. The timings of the outward journey are similar to previous years, but the bus returns half an hour earlier to connect with other buses in Pateley Bridge, and provide a more convenient return time into Leeds.

This year most services have been arranged by the Dales & Bowland Community Interest Company, with funding from North Yorkshire County Council, the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, How Stean Gorge and the Yorkshire Dales Public Transport Users Group.

The Nidderdale Summer Sunday bus network therefore comprises the following routes, running every Sunday and Bank Holiday until 28th September. As in previous years, connections between services are available at Pateley Bridge bus stand providing an increased range of day out opportunities.

Passengers on Fountains Flyer service 802 can benefit from half price admission to Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal and discounted admission to Lightwater Valley, on presentation of a valid bus ticket.

Harrogate Car Free Day

The 24th September 2008 will be the first Harrogate Car Free Day. On that date, it is hoped that as many people as possible will try their hardest to use some other means of getting about town than their car. So, whether you’re going to work, school or the shops, or visiting Harrogate from elsewhere, please support the event and leave your car at home for the day.

Harrogate Car Free Day is being organised by a group of local people, whose aim is to highlight the problems caused by traffic congestion and show how alternatives to using the car are not just better for the environment, but more fun, more economical, and healthier.

To find out more visit the Harrogate Car Free Day website.

Summer Sunday Buses in Wharfedale and Wensleydale

A completely new pattern of Sunday and Bank Holiday bus services is now running in Upper Wharfedale and Wensleydale.

Service 874 runs from Ilkley to Burnsall, Grassington and Buckden, leaving at 1015 and 1415, with good connections from Leeds on service X84. This service is operated by Arriva Yorkshire, and so is able to negotiate the arch at Bolton Abbey and will also be able to accommodate standing passengers should the need arise.

At Buckden connections are available onto service 808 running to Aysgarth and Hawes, arriving in Hawes at 1242 and 1742. The morning journey then continues to Gayle, and the afternoon journey to Ribblehead to connect with the Leeds train. Service 808 returns from Hawes to Buckden at 1520, connecting with the 1615 service 874 departure to Ilkley.

Through fares are available between services 874 and 808, with the day return fare from Ilkley to Hawes remaining unchanged at £7.50. Holders of the new English National Concessionary Passes now travel free on all DalesBus services.

The bus operating service 808 also provides a range of useful new links in Wensleydale. It sets out from Leyburn Market Place on service 807 at 0910 providing an early morning link to Aysgarth, Hawes and Ribblehead. At Ribblehead it connects with the train from Leeds to Carlisle, and then departs at 1030 for Hawes, Aysgarth and Buckden.

This new network of services has been facilitated by the Dales & Bowland CIC utilising funding from North Yorkshire County Council together with grants from other organisations, including the Yorkshire Dales Public Transport Users Group and The Friends of the Settle Carlisle Line.

These new services replace routes 800, 805 and 806. Additional buses between Ilkley, Bolton Abbey and the Strid are provided by Cravenlink service 884, which includes an earlier departure from Ilkley Bus Station at 0915 (until 28th September 2008, and also on 26th October and 2nd November 2008), and a later return from the Strid at 1742. Connections are available at Grassington with service 66A from Keighley and Skipton which continues unchanged, as do services 156 and 157 running from Northallerton and Bedale to Leyburn and Hawes.

Winter DalesBus Services

This service from Keighley and Skipton to Grassington continues to run hourly throughout the day on Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays, leaving Keighley at 0945 and every hour until 1545, returning from Grassington at 1055 and hourly until 1655.

The Sunday bus services in Nidderdale (route 24 from Harrogate to Pateley Bridge) and Wensleydale (routes 156/157 from Northallerton and Bedale to Leyburn and Hawes) are now well-established year-round routes so will continue running throughout the Winter.

From 18th November a new timetable started on services 280/X80, and the service is now operated daily by Lancashire United.

A copy of Metro's Winter Dalesbus timetable leaflet, including times of all the bus links to the Dales from West Yorkshire, can be downloaded in PDF format (approx. 800KB) here. - Please note that the timetable for Cravenlink services 784/884 is now out of date in the Metro timetable - click here for new times, and that service 805 no longer operates.

Cravenlink Service Extended

The Cravenlink Sunday bus service between Ilkley and Skipton was launched on an experimental basis by the Dales & Bowland Community Interest Company in April 2007, with funding from the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund. A new timetable was introduced from 9th December 2007, including new links to Eastby and The Strid. The service is now proving increasingly popular, with an average of over eighty passengers using it each day.

Plans for New Skipton Bus Station
