Alight from the Wensleydale Wanderer at Castle Bolton for magnificent Bolton Castle – the superbly preserved 14th century castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned and briefly escaped from – exhibitions, café, falconry displays, gardens.
Alight in the small town of Middleham to visit Richard III’s evocative ruined castle (English Heritage). Alight at Jervaulx Abbey to see romantic ruins in a beautiful rural setting - tea shop close by - or Masham with its huge market place with time for a quick visit to one of the town’s two brewery museums, or shops, cafes and inns.
On the return journey from Masham, Jervaulx Abbey or Middleham you can change buses at Leyburn to return to Hawes via Richmond (but not on Bank Holidays), explore Leyburn before catching bus 856 to Hawes, or stay on bus 857 through to Hawes.
