Enjoy a scenic trip to Fountains Abbey or the Yorkshire Dales
Every Summer Sunday and Bank Holiday (dates to be confirmed for 2021) double decker DalesBus 822 runs from York, Boroughbridge and Ripon to World Heritage Site Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, continuing to Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
There’s no need to book in advance, tickets are available from the driver, so you can simply turn up and go!
Discover the glorious ruins England’s greatest Cistercian Abbey in its perfect riverside setting, or stroll through the magnificent Water Gardens, a masterpiece of English 18th century design, filled with statues, follies and viewpoints. This superb National Trust property has a visitor centre, café/restaurant (a free hot drink for bus users with valid ticket) and gift shop. Studley Royal’s huge deer park (free admission) contains the hauntingly beautiful St Mary’s Church.
Stay on the Fountains Flyer to discover the wonderful Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, calling at Pateley Bridge with its boutique shops, cafes, pubs and the fascinating Nidderdale Museum.
You can continue on a spectacular journey past Coldstones Cut (viewpoint), over Greenhow Moor, past Stump Cross Caverns descending into beautiful Upper Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park to Grassington with its National Park Centre, shops, pubs and cobbled square.
After a short break you can travel onwards from Grassington on the same double decker bus (now DalesBus 875) up the dale, to the iconic villages of Kettlewell and Buckden, in some of Yorkshire’s finest walking country, and then experience the spectacular journey over to Aysgarth (for famous waterfalls) and Hawes (for Wensleydale Creamery)
Alternatively change onto Nidderdale DalesBus 821 at Pateley Bridge for a highly scenic journey past Gouthwaite Reservoir to Ramsgill, Lofthouse and Scar House Reservoir, starting point for lakeside or moorland walks through wild and desolate countryside.
Alight at Lofthouse for 20 minutes’ walk to the spectacular How Stean Gorge – limestone gorge and waterfalls, plus Tom Taylor’s cave and café.
