Twenty five years ago, the community of Hawes created a mosaic walk to celebrate the millennium - an 11-mile circular route around the surrounding area with 20 mosaics to find along the way. The walk leaflet has now been updated and is available to download here (PDF file).
The hamlet of Hardraw is a level, 1½ mile walk (or take the Little White Bus) from Hawes where, behind the Green Dragon Inn, you can access the steep, wooded gorge that contains Hardraw Force, England’s highest single drop waterfall.
On Monday to Saturday Little White Bus provides a minibus link between Garsdale Station, Hardraw, Hawes and Gayle, and Wensleydale Voyager service 156 up Wensleydale to Hawes from Leyburn.
On Sundays Wensleydale Flyer bus 856 runs between Northallerton, Bedale, Leyburn, Aysgarth and Hawes.
Additional buses will run on Summer Sundays and Bank Holidays from 20th April 2025 on these routes:
On Summer Saturdays from 3rd May 2025 DalesBus 80 will link Lancaster, Ingleton, Ribblehead and Hawes.
There is also a pre-bookable service to visit the Red Squirrel Trail in nearby Snaizeholme - during the summer months this is available on most days - leaving Hawes at 1110 on Monday to Saturday, and 1245 on Sundays - pre-booking is recommended to guarantee a place. During the winter months the service is available on Fridays and Saturdays, but must be pre-booked.
